Loved VLC because it played more formats than MPC without extra codecs. QuickTime files played sluggishly and seeking was very slow, compared to Apple's QuickTime Player. The feature that I loved the most was that MPC could identify what codec was needed and it'd take me to a page that had the direct links- that no longer works now. There have been no new releases since the past year. This was the first player I shifted to ever since WMP became bloated. Personally, these are my opinions on the players: ^ can you please be more elaborate on why you choose MPC + ffdshow, and what are the shortcomings you felt in the other players? This thread will be more useful if people list the reasons why they prefer a particular player instead of just saying they like it. The only players that can do that (that I know of) use an mplayer backend (such as rulesPlayer). The only other thing I want is to be able to player Quicktime files without having Quicktime installed. It would be cool if there was a version of MPC that included all of the codecs with it (similar to KMPlayer). I don't really want any skins in my applications and it takes a bit longer to startup than MPC. I don't particularly care for KMPlayer's UI or I would use it all the time.

I really like the way that KMPlayer neatly includes everything that it depends on in one package so I can put it on my USB stick and run it on any Windows machine (as opposed to GOMPlayer's gnarly installation procedure that installs who knows what where). I think I am just running a really old build of ffdshow that is the performance bottleneck, but I haven't had the time to play with it. With some HD videos, the performance is really bad so I use KMPlayer for that. I'm not saying VLC or GOM aren't a good solution, "simple no external codecs and it just works", but they are not the best of what they do, and with a little work and research you can achieve more (speed and quality).Ĭurrently I use MPC + ffdshow for watching movies. I find this combination gives me superior upsampling of lowres media, better playback of any HD files, and a more intuitive interface tha works just excellent.

personal perference i guess.ĬoreAVC 1.3 pro - very efficent H.264 software video decoder, so process 1080p files using less cpu cycles (and will support full hardware acceleration in next release, although right now software is just perfect) Media Player Classic -> I like the minimalistic interface, and extreme configerability.

Can you explain to me why it's the best win32 media solution? I'm not a huge video guru and simply use VLC to watch everything.įFDSHOW -> nice codec/filter decoder/encoder, very rich postprocessing features, when properly configured can give some of the best quality available.ĪC3Filter -> high quality free DirectShow filter designed for real time audio decoding and processing, and passthrough to spdif
